What to write in pet loss sympathy cards

It can be difficult to know what to say when someone has experienced any loss, but the unique nature of losing a pet makes it even more harder to choose the right words.

When we lose a pet, we want to feel seen. Like other people “get it.” We want to know we’re not in this alone, and that our pet’s life was significant and important. We often seek validation that we did the best we could, and that we gave our pets a wonderful life.

Acknowledge this loss like you would any other, because you may never know how deeply it’s affecting them. Pet loss can be profound, and your friend needs your support now more than ever.

The following ideas have brought us comfort, and may be helpful when sending condolences to friends or family members:

“I’m so sorry for your loss.”

“I’m so sorry to hear of _____’s passing.”

“I’m so sorry you had to say goodbye to _____.”

“My deepest sympathy on the loss of your dear friend and family member.”

“Thinking of you during this difficult time.”

“Sending love and hugs.”

“Sending healing thoughts.”

“You gave _____ such an incredible life - the kind of life I wish every dog/cat could experience.”

“________’s spirit will be with you always.”

“You were such a loving a devoted pet owner. I can’t imagine how much you miss your sweet girl/boy.”

“You shared a love with _____ like no other.”

“May your wonderful memories of _____ bring comfort and peace in this difficult time.”

“May you find comfort in your memories of a life full of love.”

“May all the memories you have shared live with you always.”

“I’m here if you need me.”

Along with general words of sympathy, if you knew the pet personally, share a nice memory and what you will miss about them.

When you express any condolences from your heart and without judgement, your friend will appreciate that you took the time to acknowledge their loss.
