Featured Business: Sky Urns

By Joy Session® | March 5, 2019

When I first came across Sky Urns, I was immediately struck by the elegant design and smart functionality of what can otherwise be a sort of "obvious" vessel. These guys have transformed standard urns into something beautiful and useful, and I'm so excited to be featuring them today! (Don't you just love the thought of being reminded of your loved ones each time you put new, fresh flowers in the vase?)

Let’s get to know you! How did Sky Urns get started?
Sky Urns began with our love for great design and from an identification with the grieving process. The designers of the Vase Urn approached us to share their creation with a broader audience. We named our company Sky Urns in homage to the original designers' company name (Big Sky Urns) and because of the connection so many cultures have with the sky in the afterlife.

It’s such a unique design, can you tell us a bit about the form + function?
Josh, Dave, and I have all lost pets (and people too) and saw the potential for the Vase Urn as a daily connector; a reminder of the great times with lost loved ones, and a way to interact with a memorial. This design allows for an urn to display prominently in today's homes that utilize updated design. Adding flowers or other mementos periodically is a great way to keep memories alive.

What are the urns made of?
Our urns are made of all natural materials.  The vase urn is handmade from high-quality ceramic, hand glazed and fired to last a lifetime. We chose colors in soft earth-tones to match today's decor.  The wooden disk is hand-cut, stained and finished to accent and maintain wood's natural durability and beauty.

What does the future hold for Sky Urns?
We are working on some new ways for memorials to be a part of an active home. We plan to keep our designs simple and elegant. Also, we're learning more about the changing environment of Aftercare for pets and how that might impact urns in the future. We welcome feedback from pet owners, veterinarians, and the pet aftercare market. Feel free to email me (Michael) at mlumpkin@skyurnspet.com.

Do you have any pets yourself?
Yes, David has a chocolate lab named Murray. Murray is high-energy, sweet, and well-fed (haha) dog. We are between dogs now because Sally, The Great Golden Chow Chow recently passed away. We celebrate her every day and are ready to get a new dog. Josh has a Golden Retriever named Polly who is a lazy sweetheart. She can be a bit clumsy and has a knack for injuring herself when she gets overexcited. Kalib has a dog named Layla - a tough looking Boxer who is actually a big softy and afraid of storms.

Thanks, guys!
