Our Featured Business today is Posh Pets Photography, in Toronto, Canada. Karen Weiler is the super nice gal behind the business, and I’m excited to learn a bit more about what she does:
Hi Karen! Could you tell us how your pet photography career got started?
Like a lot of photographers, I always had a fascination with the ability of a photograph to tell a story by freezing a moment in time and preserving memories. And, I have always loved, loved, loved animals. One day I was speaking to my husband and mused out loud, “if only there was a way to combine these two things…” His response? “There must be someone out there that knows how to do it. Find them.”
What followed was a furious Google search to discover that yes, pet photography was a thing and that I could learn how. From that moment, it’s been my only photography focus.
I love that one of the services you offer is a studio session right in your clients’ homes – can you talk about how that works?
Our Posh Pets Studio™ Sessions are unique – we bring the studio to you! That necessarily involves a little more work for me and my assistant. We pack up our vehicle to the brim with a background (that the client has chosen during our Design Consult), stands, lights, cameras, tape, clips, sand bags…literally an entire studio.
Then when we get to the client’s home, we unpack it up and set up a studio right there in the middle of the living room. (I’ve photographed pets in the living room, the family room, the basement, the garage, the kitchen…anywhere where we have enough space.) I love these sessions because we can often incorporate a little of the personality of the home in the final images – a beautiful chair or stool, or perhaps a throw that is particularly meaningful to our client. The added bonus is that we can see the decor of the home to ensure that the final artwork will look stunning displayed on any particular wall(s).
At the conclusion of the session, we pack everything up again (double-checking our materials list to ensure we have everything!) and leave the home looking like we were never there.
Once their gallery is ready, I once again return to their home to view the images together. I bring samples; we discuss sizes and locations for the artwork and they order what they love. A few weeks later, I hand-deliver their custom artwork.
Why is it important for you to offer Heritage Sessions for ill and elderly pets?
The sad reality is that we will probably outlive our pets. When the time comes, in the midst of all of the vet appointments, the scheduled medication, and the crushing grief, I believe it is important to carve out time to just be with our dogs and cats and celebrate a life well-lived. Their lives have brought us so much joy and happiness and shouldn’t end with only the memory of the eventual sadness.
My Heritage Sessions are at the pace of the pet and the client. We take our time. We linger. We laugh. We cry. The experience is just as important as the images.
Do you have a memorable client or session you’d like to share?
Definitely. Buddy came all the way from Pennsylvania for his farewell tour. We met in Niagara on the Lake where he had travelled with his girl many times before, and he sniffed all of his favourite haunts. He had a picnic in the park with his family. He dipped his toes in the lake. He was saying good-bye in the most gracious, beautiful way possible.
