When I met Toby the white Lab, the prognosis wasn't good. His liver was failing and the clock was ticking. I distinctly remember sitting across the table from his Mom saying, maybe Toby would defy the odds. Every time I photograph an end-of-life “legacy” photo session, this is my hope. Maybe he'd make it longer... maybe there would be more time for love, laughter and memories.
Unfortunately, there wasn't. Just a mere six weeks after his photo session, Toby's family helped him cross the rainbow bridge.
It’s hard to accept that no matter how much we love our dogs, the end is inevitable. It’s an unfortunate fact of life. We never have them long enough. Thankfully, in Toby’s case, his family has a breathtaking coffee table album, and the memories of that beautiful summer day, to cherish.
One of my favorite dog quotes, fits Toby’s gentle, loving soul perfectly:
“Everybody is born so that they can learn how to live a good life and love others - dogs already know how to do that so they don't have to stay as long.” ~ Author unknown
