When I first came across Big Sky Urns, I was immediately struck by the elegant design and smart functionality of what can otherwise be a sort of "obvious" vessel. These guys have transformed standard urns into something beautiful and useful, and I'm so excited to be featuring them today! (Don't you just love the thought of being reminded of your loved ones each time you put new, fresh flowers in the vase?)

Let’s get to know you! How did Big Sky Urns get started?
Big Sky Urns began when Mac and Aaron met while working in Big Sky Montana. We both grew up in families in the afterlife care industry. Wanting to help people during times of grief, we decided to use our experiences and merge it with our love of pets. Soon after, Mac’s childhood buddy, Brian left his job at an architecture firm to bring his design background to the mix, completing the founding trio.
It’s such a unique design, can you tell us a bit about the form + function?
Thank you, we’re really excited about all the positive reactions. The union of form and function stems from our desire to offer a refreshing, functional purpose to memorials. We’re designing memorials that go beyond just being a final resting place, incorporating them into household decorations. This concept inspired our vase urn, which is a memorial concealed within a fully waterproof vase for flowers or personalized decorations.
Our memorials are a place where your loved ones are kept close inside a piece of art, bringing comfort and warmth into your home for a long time to come.
What are the urns made of?
We partner with craftsmen to ensure our urns are completely handmade in the U.S. Currently, we are using sustainably harvested sapelle hardwood and high quality ceramics, and are always on the lookout for new materials.
It’s so great that you’ve joined 1% For the Planet! Which nonprofit(s) do you contribute to?
We joined 1% For the Planet because Big Sky Urns is bigger than just a business. We donate to a variety of charities we personally connect with ranging from animal shelters to wilderness conservation. We strive to leave this world a better place than we found it.
What does the future hold for Big Sky Urns?
Currently we are working on releasing more colors and developing additional functional designs in varying sizes. A recent exciting development is the launch of our custom engraving option. Thinking big picture, we are always eager to hear from our customers and connect with likeminded people and businesses to build our community.
Do you have any pets yourself?
We are so happy to have some furry family members. Mac’s family has Miss Daisy, a sweet Yorkshire Terrier; Aaron recently adopted trouble maker, Clarabelle; and until he gets his own pet, Brian takes care of the neighborhood cat, Mister Pattie Cakes.
