Loving a pet is not a solitary, isolated act. It brings people together through a shared experience. It challenges us to open our hearts to new experiences, new relationships, even in the wake of a tragic loss. Caring for one animal leads to caring for other animals, other people, and even global issues. Pets give us something wonderful to come home to, no matter what challenges our days have brought us. They know the difference between when we're sad and when we're happy, and they know how to push our buttons to get what they want. They're silly, wonderful, charming little creatures that we've chosen to spend our lives with, and each one comes a story.
Where they're from and what they've experienced; how you found each other; what their quirks or defining characteristics are; which toy is always their favorite, no matter how many amazing new toys you get them; how the box it came in is always more appealing than the item inside. They make us laugh, they make us cry; they become a part of us. They're a huge part of our lives, and when it's their time to go, it's a deep and powerful loss.
Be honest now: You know you love talking about your pet and sharing photos from your phone with anyone who's interested (or even if they're not!) I do it too 🙂 So I wanted to create an opportunity to share our stories, our photos, our experiences with our furry (or feathered? scaled?) companions. Submit as many stories as you like! No judgements here on the content, length or eloquence of your writing.
It can be a recounting of a specific event, or a general telling of something that's special to you; it can be a poem, it can rhyme, it can not rhyme; it can be told from your perspective or your pet's perspective; it can be short, it can be long (up to 4,000 characters); it can be about a current pet, or a pet that has passed away; it's anything you want it to be. Throw the rules out the window! All we ask is that the story be true (no fiction, please) and involve a pet that touched your life in some way.
Like the time the groomer accidentally shaved off your dog's eyebrow, or you came home to find remnants of a paper bag all over the house and your cat sitting on the stairs with the bag's handle looped around her. Oh wait, maybe that was just me 😉
Our favorites will be published both here on the blog and our Facebook page, and every story will be automatically entered in a weekly drawing for fun animal-related artwork and products. (Hand-picked by me!) I'll plan to share each week's prize - as well as the previous week's winner - on Mondays. (This first one will just be a slightly shorter week... see this week's prize at the end of this post)
Please let me know if you have any questions or issues with the form: email@example.com
I look forward to reading all of your beautiful stories!
This week's prize: 5-pack of greeting cards + envelopes, featuring one of Jessie's paintings, from Stray Dog Arts. Great as a sympathy card, or "just because."
